It’s an odd title for a blog I know, but lets face it a blog called “5 reasons I’d photograph your baby” sounded even stranger & much less intriguing, so I went with this option instead.
Most photographers as time goes on start to offer more & more genre’s & styles of photography, broadening their reach & specialisms.
But I’m a bit of an oddity in the photography world, being so booked up all the time that I’ve become more & more niche in what I photograph.
Helping to manage demand by specialising only in photographing babies in my little white studio.
So here’s a little insight into the types of sessions I don’t offer & a brief overview as to why.
- I don’t photograph babies aged 1-6 months old
Babies of all ages are perfect & I could certainly offer sessions for all ages, but I find I’m not able to get as much variety in galleries for little ones aged 1-6 months. During this time babies are generally only able to lay on their backs & sometimes on their fronts for short periods. So the angles & types of shots I’m able to capture are much more limited.
From 7 months onwards you can really see their personalities coming through in photos both from their expressions & the way they move. That’s why I decided to specialise in this age (7-12 months) as I want families to get the absolute most from their session.
- I’m fully booked
3 years ago when I started getting fully booked 3 months in advance I thought it was just a blip, I was sure it wouldn’t continue. But fast forward another 2 years & I’m now constantly fully booked 4-5 months in advance.
I’m so, so thankful, but it does break my heart not being able to fit everyone in & it’s the reason I decided to become to specialist & photograph only the ages & styles that I was most confident with & enjoyed photographing the most.
- You want a family session featuring 2 cousins, an aunt twice removed, an uncle & 3 god parents
I adore my studio, it’s south facing, has an amazing huge window & has all the toys & outfits I could ever need. But it’s only little, which although perfect for babies means that there’s not enough room for lots of people.
- You’re planning an event
Quite frankly I’d suck at event photography, no honestly I would. In my studio I can see the light, I can see the angle it’s coming in at & know instinctively how to use it.
But if I’m somewhere I’m not familiar with, that has changeable lighting, lots of people &/or furniture to work around, then I’m so far out of my comfort zone that being creative becomes almost impossible.
- You’ve picked someone else
There are so many styles of baby photography out there, so I urge every parent to research as much as they can to find the style of photography that they adore. That could be a more posed style, completely natural in your home, outdoors, or maybe more natural but in a studio environment which is what I offer.
This is my thinking too , it’s really hard to explain why I won’t photograph babies anymore, you have worded it perfect and yes , I still always check in on you blog and experiences 🤍
