Baby photography is a funny old thing.
You see many baby photographers aim to pose baby and I’m not just talking newborn poses.
They want baby to be in a very specific position, looking only a certain way.
So that they can get the ‘perfect portrait photo’.
But I see baby photography differently, for me it needs to tell more of a story than just how baby looked.
It should show their little personalities, how they moved, their excitement as they rolled/clapped/crawled.
Baby photography can be both beautiful and natural, so you can see your baby as they were at that age.
Baby Photography and how we do it…
I have an at home studio in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. But even the studio is very natural.
It’s a white room with a beautiful full length window and for baby photography I usually put a few beautifully soft blankets out for baby to sit/lay on.
I start with some relaxed settling in time. We sit with your little one and chat while they look around and play with some of the toys in the studio.
The studio is filled to the brim with beautiful natural wood toys which look stunning in photos and the babies adore.
Then we get baby ready, usually we start with them in a nappy which they love and we all move back so that I can start snapping away.
In traditional baby photography the aim is always to have baby looking at the camera, but I think it’s more special to see their reactions to you in the images.
So I’ll have one of both parents sat in front of baby. You’ll sing songs (I apologise in advance as my voice is dire), play games, blow bubbles and you’ll basically spend 45 mins – 1 hour totally focussed on enjoying your baby.
Something that the trials and tribulations of normal life often makes difficult.
Then we change them into a simple white vest, something you’ll remember seeing them in every day and that they won’t look back on in 15 years time and cringe.
And that’s it, super simple, relaxed and beautiful.
