I always thought that a newborn photographer had to create specific poses and use all manner of adorable hats, wraps, blankets, backdrops, buckets.
That photos of a family with their newborn baby needed to have everyone looking and smiling at the camera while the baby slept in such a way that you could see their whole face.
So I trained with a newborn photographer that specialised in posing babies and another newborn photographer who was phenomenal at creating classic posed family photos. I learnt how to safely put these tiny newborn babies into positions named the ‘froggy’ and the ‘potato sack’ and the specific directions to give families for those smiley, classic family photos.
But something was missing for me.
These photos of newborns and their families looked beautiful, but I just wasn’t feeling totally fulfilled.
It wasn’t really until I fell pregnant with my second son George and started to think which images I’d want his newborn photographer to focus on that I realised what had been absent all this time.
Authenticity and emotion.
Having a new baby is such an emotional time, so filled with trepidation and then absolute elation, joy and love when they arrive.
Just capturing them in cute poses and records of how the family looked just wasn’t enough for me as a newborn photographer.
I wanted more. I wanted to capture that love and the newborn baby as they truly were.
For me as a newborn photographer I need your babies photos to be as unique and beautiful as they are. The poses are stunning, but the photos don’t tell me enough about your baby.
I believe newborn photos should capture how your baby liked to lay, how they held their arms, how they liked to scrunch up their fingers and stretch as they yawned.
That’s why for me as a newborn photographer, baby led photography is perfect.
I watch your baby and see what he/she is like and how they are most comfortable. I then capture this essence and every little detail.
I take the same approach for family photos and just give some tips as to where to stand or sit for the best light. I then let the family be themselves, capturing the love and natural devotion as it plays out in front of me.
The ultimate goal for me as a newborn photographer is to make the family feel all of those emotions and be reminded about every detail of their baby when they look at their photos.
