1st birthday sessions make me cry and here’s why…
It’s such a momentous occasion to mark. That first year is huge both for the baby and for mum and dad.
- It’s a year of incredible unforgettable highs – their first smile, those snuggles you wish would never end and of course the first time they sleep through the night (hell yeah I celebrated this like a good’un, even if it didn’t last long)
- It’s also a year of unimaginable lows – the utter lack of sleep, the first time they’re really poorly and did I mention the lack of sleep!?
So here you are at the end of that first year, your teeny little baby has grown with their own individual personalities and without sounding cheesy, it’s a time for celebration.
That’s basically the mindset I had when devising my 1st birthday cake smash sessions. They’re a chance for your little one to have fun. We sing songs, blow bubbles, throw feathers and of course they get to gobble a delicious cake and have a bath in the coolest little roll top tub ever invented.
But here’s why I often get a bit emosh (as the cool kids put it) when I edit these galleries. I get to go through all the photos and see that incredible connection between mum, dad and baby. Those elated little faces and smiles that show utter, complete love and adoration, get me every time!
I remember the songs, noises and funny faces that mum and dad pulled. They’re so personal to that family and I get to be a part of that moment with them.
So in essence 1st birthday cake smashes aren’t really about the cake and the bath, but the connection. That hour where mum and dad are totally focussed on their little baby and in the moment with them celebrating this huge milestone.
That’s why I often shed a little happy tear.
